what if Mahr is Postponed?

Postponing Mahr in Islam

When the marriage vows are spoken, the husband presents his bride with a gift known as Mihr or Sadaq. The word Mihr does not occur in the Holy Quran; instead, the word Sadaq is used.

 The Quran states:

And give not unto the foolish your property which Allâh has made a means of support for you,1 but feed and clothe them therewith, and speak to them words of kindness and justice.” (Surah Nisa 4:4)

According to Islamic marriage, it is the husband’s responsibility to provide for his wife Mahr at the moment of Nikah. Mahr is more than simply a monetary payment; it is a fundamental right of every Muslim wife. We must not be so rigid in establishing that we jeopardize the marriage of young adults. We must avoid excess and choose an acceptable and modest that is appropriate for the status of engaged couples and the social station of their families, as well as consistent with the husband-to-financial be’s resources.

Furthermore, there are no restrictions on the sort of Mahr—it can be gold, silver, real estate, currencies, home appliances, carpets, dishes, automobiles, clothes, or anything else that can be possessed. However, it is in the woman’s best interests if she sets her Mahr to be real estate, gold, silver, and the like. This is done so that its value does not deteriorate with time and it may act as her reserve.

The real question is,

Can Mahr be postponed?

Nowadays, it is customary practices among Muslims to divide the sum of Mahr into two halves. While one share is paid in advance during Nikah, the second piece is paid when the couple dies or divorces, whichever occurs first.

Postponing the Mahr in this manner is neither praised by Allah nor encouraged by the Prophet. Such a ceremony was created as an easy means to limit the budget, which is clearly contrary to what Allah instructed.

If any other method is used instead of the traditional approach of presenting Mahr at Nikah, the actual meaning of Mahr is lost. This leads to the wife’s loss of faith and closeness with her husband following their Nikah.

As a result, it is always suggested to follow Allah’s commands. They were designed for our benefit and peace. Following the Sunnah traditions would always provide us happiness and tranquility in our marriage.
